Importance of Universal Blood

Blood transfusion medicine continues to be affected negatively by:

  • A shrinking pool of eligible blood donors.

  • Higher donor recruiting costs.

  • Incremental laboratory expenses and staffing requirements associated with additional requirements for infectious disease testing.

  • A smaller overall blood inventory.

  • Expanding difficulties associated with logistics and inventory management in making sure the right amount of each blood group is available at each transfusion site as needed within the 42-day shelf life of the red cell.

Additionally, and in spite of extraordinary and redundant efforts to match the blood group of the recipient with the group of the donor blood, the greatest risk associated with blood transfusion is the risk of transfusing accidentally the wrong ABO group.

These problems and other trends have increased significantly the costs and complexities of managing the relationship between the blood supply and transfusion demand and offer ZymeQuest a significant business opportunity.

With the conversion of all non-O red cells to universal group O, and, subsequently, the delivery of an all group O inventory for transfusion in our hospitals, most of the costs and difficulties associated with maintaining and managing the blood supply will be reduced or eliminated.  Moreover, transfusion safety will be enhanced by eliminating the risk of transfusing an incompatible blood group.
