ZymeQuest's products will:

• Decrease the costs and difficulties associated with matching the supply of and demand for red blood cells for transfusion. 

• Reduce the amount of donor blood discarded because of outdating.

• Decrease the number of donor units required for collection each year. 

• Simplify and increase the effectiveness of the logistical support required to manage blood inventory and distribution systems.

• Enhance the overall safety of blood transfusion medicine by diminishing the risk of incompatible transfusions that may result in permanent injury to, or death of, the recipient.

ZymeQuest’s blood conversion products will contribute to cost containment while providing safer and higher quality health care.  There are increasing difficulties in managing effectively the distribution of red cells for transfusion that have been exacerbated by the risks and fears associated with blood-borne diseases such as AIDS and hepatitis.

In addition to its use in enzyme conversion, ZymeQuest believes its proprietary device technology may also serve as a “manufacturing platform” in regional blood centers.  ZymeQuest’s target is the delivery of a leukodepleted, virally inactivated group O red cell that is produced from a single processing procedure.  (Note:  ZymeQuest intends to develop neither leukodepletion filters nor viral inactivation compounds but rather will rely on the availability of such technologies from other companies.)

The company’s proprietary device technology may also be well suited for the development of new and improved systems for other types of automated extracorporeal blood cell processing.  Such uses could include, among others, red cell washing and deglycerolization, intraoperative autologous cell salvage, apheresis red cell collection and umbilical cord stem cell processing.  ZymeQuest is exploring development opportunities for these applications in the United States and internationally.
